SURFACING
Early spring pressed in upon us all
Its quickening light cold and sharp
Rushing to our senses still in winter sleep
The lake was frozen but we all fell in
We were piercing the ice in a small boat
Holding the idea we're all in the same boat
And then it toppled and we all tumbled
We sunk down into the reedy bed
Blinded by weeds and murky water
Shards of winter rays just enough to see
That we were each a swimming search
Looking for each other in the dark
That was the early spring we all fell
In love with a one who was disappearing
Each were swimming towards another
And all our hearts were little wrecks
Like toy boats abandoned in a pond
Until the shadow of the big boat returned
Loomed over us all and each humbled
We one-by-one surfaced with washed eyes
We clung to the gunnels and breathed
An unbenown distance had opened up
It finally meant I could see your face
Its lines and colours in the warming sun
Bobbing bravely on the shimmering lake
Treading water and surviving the wrench
All that piercing the ice in a small boat
Holding the idea we all rocked the boat
And I said out loud so blithe and free
I am a swimmer too and I am alive
And I am happy beyond what I know
That you dearest friend are alive too
